Knitting needles are available in a variety of styles, and sizes. Many people especially the young generation find it extremely difficult to know which one to use for a given material. Needle diameter affects the gauge of knitting and hence, must be carefully selected.
These needles could be made from materials like plastic, wood, or metal. The sizes can range from 0000 to 50 whereas these sizes could be available in multiple varieties like double-pointed, circular, or straight needles.
The difference also arises based on the point of the needle. A sharp-pointed needle is particularly the best choice for knitting fine yarns. However, if a kid is supposed to handle the needle or if you need to do bulk knitting, you should go for circular knitting needles with large rounded points.
Some basic styles of needles available for knitting
-
Straight needles:
- These are very common and are sold in pairs.
- The lengths of the needle may vary starting from 7” to 14”.
- They’re excellent for smaller projects that don’t have a lot of heft.
- They can also be used on projects in which little portions are knitted separately and are sewed in the end.
-
Circular needles:
- These needles are best for large knitting projects.
- These needles are connected by a flexible cord, making them appear to be one long needle.
- 16” to 32” is the average length of these needles.
- These needles reduce the stress on your wrists while you are knitting in a bulk amount.
-
Double pointed needles:
- These are known as DPNs.
- They are short needles with pointed ends on both sides.
- You cannot buy a single needle but usually, sets of fours or fives are sold in the market.
- Seamless knitting is best accomplished by these needles such as infant caps.
-
Interchangeable needles:
- When you want to be versatile with your knitting projects and want to accomplish different styles with a single needle, this one is just perfect.
- With a solid tip attached to a flexible cord, there is also a mechanism that allows for the adjustment of cord lengths and needle sizes.
- These can be used as both circular as well as straight needles.
Wooden knitting needles are quite popular nowadays. Needles made out of bamboo are quite sturdy and can firmly hold any type of knitting project. Wood needles, which can be fashioned from any hardwood, provide knitters with a consistent knitting speed. You can also get a smooth finish along with softness that you will fail to achieve with metal or acrylic needles.
Classic wood knitting needles are quite expensive. On the contrary, bamboo is a cheaper option while retaining the tenderness and warmth of wood.
While most yarns will specify a needle size, keep in mind that this is only a recommendation. Everyone knits differently, thus you must select the needles according to your comfort zone. Determining the gauge can be used as the safest parameter to determine the right needle size.
